‘Tis the first Monday of #BEDM, and today the gang and I are going to share with you our own thoughtful, opinion based posts. What I’ve been thinking about lately is the idea of the Well-Rounded Person.
I’ve heard this phrase over and over again throughout my life and every time I think to myself: who is that? What exactly is the well-rounded person?
I assume it means somebody that’s got their life together. When I’m feeling particularly antsy and want to jump into something new and fresh, there’s always that somebody in my life telling me to wait. Wait until you’re older. Wait until you’ve got a career and you’re financially stable. Wait until you’ve got your life together. Wait until you’re ready.
To me, “well-rounded” is synonymous with “perfection”. In my head, I picture this:
The Well Rounded Person
- an education
- in love
- a nice home
- cars, and shiny things
- has an awesome career
- mentally stable
Newsflash: I don’t think anyone thinks of themselves as well-rounded. I don’t think anybody is ready. I believe striving to be a well-rounded person is like being at the dog racing track: you’re the dog, and your dream of being well-rounded is the lure. You’re always edging closer, as it’s moving further away. The last bullet point is the most important. No matter where our lives have taken us, we all want to eventually be happy. Some of us already are, but what could make up happier? You see, there’s no finish line.
“If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives.”― Lemony Snicket, The Ersatz Elevator
There’s so much more we can do. There’s so much more we can be! There’s so much more we can have. Have you seen every corner of this beautiful world, yet? Me neither. What are you waiting for?
The people that appear to have it together aren’t quite as settled as you may think, because there is always something that they’re reaching for. Our timelines are a bit different, but we’re all on this quest of stability and happiness. I don’t think we’ll ever be set, because there’s always that thing we crave that’s a little out of our reach right now. That’s what keeps us dreamin’, friends.
So, stop telling me to wait. Why wait? I am ready.
