Update: I now have an easier, mess-free shortcut to this! Pick up a skull container from World Market for $14.99, and a can of spray paint in your choice of color! I love this brand of spray paint the best.

What You’ll Need
- plaster skull from Michael’s craft store (check Shopular for coupons, I scored mine for $7 with a 40% off coupon)
- black acrylic paint
- an inexpensive handsaw
- sandpaper
- Crayola Model Magic in white
What You’ll Do
First, you’re going to need to cut a hole in the top of your skull. I did this using a cheap hand saw I had lying around. This will make a huge mess and everything will be covered in white powder so it’s best to do this outside. I attempted pictures of this step that didn’t come out right, because my lens, too, was covered in white powder. When the flash went off, it was orbs galore.
If you fumble and mess up on your hole-cutting, that’s okay! I’ll show you how to fix it below.

Next, take your sand paper and sand the inside and the edges until they’re as smooth as a baby’s bottom. I used drywall sandpaper and a sanding block I keep in the house.
When you’re done with the sanding, wipe it or rinse all of the white powder off and let it dry completely before continuing.
Oops, we fumbled. During the sawing process, I chipped some areas and went in too deep with some of the lines. That didn’t phase me, because I took my Model Magic (in white) and repaired/filled in places that needed to be fixed.

I also took the Model Magic and filled in the eyes, nose, mouth and bottom from the inside so my makeup brushes wouldn’t fall out. Covering the eye holes is totally optional!
Then, let it dry out completely overnight. When you are ready to work on it again in the morning, the last step is to paint it solid black with acrylic paint!

Voila, you’re all finished! I think I prefer this one to the ones I found online. What do you think? Now you’ve got your very own skull makeup brush holder that is 100x better than the more expensive one on Etsy. 🙂
If you’re caught in between Halloweens like I was at first, Amazon has some options for jars you can use as-is or customize to your liking:
